MAF Sensor Symptoms: Signs It’s Failing and What To Do Next
If your car feels sluggish, idles rough, or your fuel economy drops suddenly, a failing MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor is a common culprit. The MAF helps the ECU calculate the correct air/fuel mix. When readings are wrong, performance suffers.
Common symptoms of a bad MAF sensor
- Hesitation or flat spots on acceleration
- Rough idle or stalling at junctions
- Poor MPG and fuel smell
- Random limp mode (especially under load)
- Check Engine Light (common codes: P0100–P0104)
Quick checks before replacing
- Inspect intake pipework for splits and loose clamps
- Check the connector for corrosion and broken pins
- Try proper MAF cleaner (never use brake cleaner)
When replacement makes sense
If cleaning helps only briefly, or symptoms return quickly, replacement is usually the long-term fix.
